The Port Theatre presents the non-ruse version of Cliff Cardinal’s exciting and challenging new work. What’s the non-ruse version? It means we’re letting you in on his secret… ahead of time. Turns out, the play has nothing to do with William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. In the ruse version, patrons think they’re sitting down to a classic Bard production. But there’s a plot twist!
“The Land Acknowledgement or As You Like It” starts with Cliff Cardinal coming onstage and offering what initially seems like a standard land acknowledgment that gets longer and more challenging, and saltier and funnier, until it becomes clear that the land acknowledgment in fact is the show itself. By one of Canada’s foremost Indigenous playwright performers, this scorching solo show is the unvarnished truth of the state of the reconciliation in this country. This award-winning show sold-out in Toronto and New York City, and now finds its way to Vancouver Island.
